Well, for those whose palms sweat bullets at the thought of verbally sharing their faith, is there anything they can do? Absolutely!

My daughters and I spent a day at Dollywood in Tennessee recently, and I had with me a pocket full of collectible Ten Commandments coins (Ten Commandments Coins), and my digital camera.

I set the camera in "Museum" mode, and went about sitting on benches and "planting" a coin in plain view just out of my own reach and waiting for someone to sit next to me that would actually pick up the coin. It's always amazing to me how many folks will look at it but not touch it! Even more will look it over, pick it up briefly, and put it right back down like it's a hot rock. Hmmm.

I did have some takers, though. As you can see from the photos below, these two men not only picked up the coin, they studied it. They looked it over and over for more than a couple of minutes each:

With the camera set at "Museum," there's no flash and no clicking sound, so I was able to snap these shots without anyone knowing. Obviously, I do not know either of these men, or their eternal destiny. Please pray for their salvation, or if they are saved already that they would pass the coin along to a lost person.

If you are one who describes yourself as too timid to witness, doesn't this look easy? It's even fun because it's kind of sneaky.

Get out of your comfort zone a little bit at a time, get creative, and get the Word out!

Send me your photos and tell me your "success" stories.

Will God flatten your tire? He did mine!

Wow! What an afternoon in Anniston, AL! I'm here on business, and having no more contacts to make this afternoon, I decided to get in a round of golf. I found a beautiful little course tucked away in the hills and enjoyed an afternoon of breathtaking scenery and good exercise (when you swing the club as many times as I did...it's especially good exercise!).

I finished up shortly before dark and headed past the clubhouse to unload my clubs at the minivan. I nodded at the "cart boy" as I went by, as if to let him know I'd be right back with the cart. However, as I drew near to my van, I could see there was a flat tire on the driver's side rear. I guess because I was so thankful for the lovely afternoon God had given me, I wasn't really upset about the tire...Not really happy...but not really upset either.

Since I had to get the jack from the area in which I planned to store my clubs, I left them on the cart and forgot about the young man waiting to collect the cart.

Shortly after I got started on the tire, the young man who later told me his name was Chris came over and asked if I needed any help. I thanked him but said I thought I could take care of it. He stood and chatted with me as I worked on the tire, and he handed me things as I needed them.

As we talked, I learned that he had moved there from another state to live with his mother, but it didn't work out for some reason, and at seventeen years of age, he found himself living in a 1987 Chevy Suburban - though he hoped to be in a residence very soon. He admitted things were tough, but said confidently, "It's gonna be okay, though - I've got Jesus on my side."

As I heard him say that, I thought to myself, "Okay Father, I get the hint."

After a little more friendly discussion, I told him that if he hung around until I got through, I'd show him a couple of illusions, then give him a chance to win $20. He said, "Okay."

I finished, then showed him the curved illusion tract, which amused him. Then I showed him how I could "make" a $2 bill out of two $1 bills...That blew his mind! Then I pulled out a $20, and told him that if he could prove that he was a "good" person, he'd win the $20. I said, "Do you consider yourself to be a good person?" He was pretty confident that he was.

Had he ever told a lie? You know that he had, and he pretty quickly realized that it made him a liar. He had also stolen, making him a thief, and he admitted lustful thoughts, making him an adulterer. He also admitted dishonoring his parents, as well as other Commandments.

He was a very humble young man by that time and even readily admitted that he would be guilty before a Holy God on the Day of Judgment, and that unless something happened to change his destiny, he was headed for an eternity in Hell.

He placed his hope in the "goodness" of God, though, saying he planned to ask God to forgive him. But he completely understood when I "reasoned" with him that God's "goodness" would compel Him to punish sinners just like a judge in a court of law could only be called "good" if he saw that justice was done in every case.

Once all the reasoning was over with, I said, "Chris - what are you gonna do?" And he hung his head and indicated that he did not know.

At that point, I had the unspeakable honor of sharing the Good News with him, that his "fine" had been paid for him by the suffering death of Christ, and explained the way of salvation to him completely - that he must confess his sins to God AND forsake those sins, and completely trust that the penalty paid by Jesus was enough.

I promised him that God is faithful and that if he cried out to God, He would give him a new heart, with new desires, and would count him as innocent based on the fact that his sentence had already been served by the Lord Jesus Christ.

I prayed with him and loaded him down with a copy of the Gospel of John, our "Are You a Good Person?" tract to remind him of our discussion, and other literature.

Oh yeah, as a real-life demonstration of what God's grace does, giving us Heaven when we deserve Hell, I gave him the $20, too.

Pray for Chris. He who began a good work in him tonight is faithful to complete it.

The next time you get a flat tire...look around!

Praise God.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://perfectlaw.blogspot.com/2005/04/will-god-flatten-your-tire-he-did-mine.html' title='Will God flatten your tire? Well, I don't think we've been listed in any obituary columns, but it has been a while since the post was updated, and for that I apologize.

It's not that we haven't been busy...in fact, we've had a lot going on.

You know, Isaiah 26:3 is one of my favorite promises, the God will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Him. Well, on a recent Wednesday night prayer meeting at Easthaven Baptist Church, we considered just that. We had a discussion of the sort of mind one must have to keep it "stayed on Him."

At a monthly meeting of the "Brotherhood" at Wesson First Baptist, we took a good look at fear. We talked about what we were afraid of and shouldn't be, and Whom we did not fear...and should.

We shared the gospel with some sweet folks at Silver Cross Nursing Home in Brookhaven, discussing the "ancient landmarks" and why we shouldn't remove them.

There have been other meetings, and I will do my best to be more faithful in updating the blog.

New Home Baptist Church - Deacon Ordination - January 16, 2005

Deacon Ordination services were held Sunday afternoon January 16, 2005 at New Home Baptist Church outside of Taylorsville, MS.

Thanks to Pastor Ron Swindall for inviting me to offer a challenge to the Deacon candidates, the existing Deacons, and the local body at large.

Acts 6:1-7 was the platform off which we launched our discussion, looking at the reason for the first Deacons being chosen, the requirements those men had to meet, and the results of the brethren choosing the right men...Revival!

We decided that from this passage, it was plain to see that Deacons were to be servants, not masters, so we turned our attention to the characteristics of a servant by looking at the servant heart of our Lord, Jesus, in Philippians 2:3-11.

Look at the words & phrases in that passage:

"nothing through selfish ambition or conceit"

"lowliness of mind"

"esteeming others"

"interests of others"

"of no reputation" in v7

"bondservant"

"likeness of men"

"humbled Himself"

"obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross"

Get the picture? Those phrases describe what it means to be a servant, so they also describe what it means to be a Deacon.

Having settled the issue of what it means to be a servant, we turned our attention to Stephen and Philip, two Deacons who understood their roles as Deacons and who had tremendous ministries...so much so that two chapters of Acts are devoted to them!

From their lives and example we learned of these Deacons the following:

They were men with hearts full of the Word.

They were men with hearts full of Worship, and

They were men with hearts for Witnessing.

From Acts 7:2-53 we learned that Stephen was a man who was filled to overflowing with the Word of God. Those verses are, for the most part, an account of Stephen quoting the word off the top of his head...under considerable pressure I might add. How was he able to do that? He had filled his heart with the Word during the good times, so that it was at the ready when the pressure came.

It's also evident from vv54-56 and following that Stephen was also one whose heart was full of worship, for as the crowd "gnashed their teeth" at him, he didn't gnash back - he turned his eyes upon Jesus and worshipped Him. Oh that we would be so ready to look to the Lord rather than bite back when folks gnaw on us.

As Stephen was dying from the brutal death of stoning, he displayed his heart for witnessing as he asked Jesus to forgive them. He was more concerned for their salvation than he was about vengeance.

Philip hits the ground running in chapter 8, following the scattering of the believers from Saul's persecution, as he turns up in Samaria, preaches the Word with the accompanying signs and wonders, and they had revival. Then an angel sent him to an Ethiopian eunuch and he got saved. Then the Holy Spirit "beamed him up" and dropped him off in Azotus and from there, every where he went he preached the word.

As Deacons, as believers, we are to preach the gospel everywhere we go. We must learn to do so effectively.

That's the purpose of Perfect Law Ministries - to equip the saints to share their faith effectively, the way Jesus did.

On a technical note, I brought my digital voice recorder with me and had hoped to record the message and perhaps have it posted to the website. However, having pushed only one of the two buttons required to turn the thing on and place it in "record" mode...I got nothing. Sorry.

Pray that the seeds of the gospel sewn this day will produce a harvest 30, 60, and 100-fold.

Judgment Must Begin at...the bottom of our web page!

1 Peter 4:17 says, "For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God?"

The Ninth of the Ten Commandments is in essence, "Thou Shalt Not Lie." In an effort to be "market savvy," we have violated that commandment right on our own web page! The counter at the bottom was set to start at 1001. That's a common practice, kind of like with a new checking account - nobody starts with "1" as the number of the first check. It's usually 100, or 200, or something. I guess that's to give it the appearance of being an established account, with a history and therefore more credibility. I further guess that's what we wanted to do with the web counter. No, I really don't "guess." I know - it was my call.

Sorry about that.

As soon as our able web guru can get to it, the counter will be reset, not to zero, but to the appropriate figure representing the real number of hits so far.

One of the great things about being a Christian is that the Holy Spirit is faithful to point out inconsistencies...okay, code word for "sin." Without Him, there's no end to the hypocrisy of man...uh...me.

Forgive us, please.

Ready, set, go...the launching of Perfect Law Ministries!

What an exciting time! As of January 1, 2005, Perfect Law Ministries becomes an active ministry to the Glory of God! Our website is nearly complete, thanks to the excellent work and creativity of our web guru, Pamela "P.J." Beauvais, and letters introducing our ministry went out this morning to nearly 65 area churches, for delivery shortly after the first of the year.

According to Psalm 19:7a, "The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul:..." Hence the name of our ministry, “Perfect Law Ministries.”

Charles H. Spurgeon, the "Prince of Preachers," said, "I do not believe that any man can preach the gospel who does not preach the Law. The Law is the needle, and you cannot draw the silken thread of the gospel through a man's heart unless you first send the needle of the Law to make way for it."

Paul said, in Romans 7:7, "...I had not known sin, but by the law..."

Galatians 3:24 tells us, "the law was our schoolmaster, to bring us to Christ..."

1 Timothy 1:8 says that the "law is good, if it is used lawfully."

1 John 3:4 informs us that sin is defined as "transgression of the law."

The purpose of our ministry is a combination of passion and calling: Our passion is to reach the lost for Christ and our calling is to “equip the saints,” according to Ephesians 4, by training as many believers as possible in the principles of Biblical evangelism and motivating them to put those principles into action as soon as possible.

My wife, Patti, and I covet your prayers as we seek the will of the Father regarding our ministry.

Here's me at a recent festival, discussing with these folks why God gave us His Ten Commandments...not to show us how to live, but to show us our need for a Savior. All my friends will be there."

Obviously, those who flippantly say such things don’t believe in the biblical concept of hell. Their understanding of the nature of God is erroneous. The slow-witted criminal thinks that the electric chair is a place to put up his feet for a while and relax. It may be wise therefore to speak with him for a few moments about the reasonableness of a place called hell.

Reason with him by saying, "If a judge in Florida turns a blind eye to the unlawful dealings of the Mafia, if he sees their murderous acts and deliberately turns the other way, is he a good or bad judge? He’s obviously corrupt, and should be brought to justice himself. If he is a good judge, he will do everything within his power to bring those murderers to justice. He should make sure that they are justly punished.

"If Almighty God sees a man rape and strangle to death your sister or mother, do you think He should look the other way, or bring that murderer to justice? If He looks the other way, He’s corrupt and should be brought to justice Himself. It makes sense then, that if God is good, He will do everything in His power to ensure justice is done. The Bible tells us that He will punish murderers, and the place of punishment—the prison God will send them to—is a place called hell.

"God should punish murderers and rapists. However, God is so good, he will also punish thieves, liars, adulterers, fornicators, and blasphemers. He will even punish those who desired to murder and rape but never took the opportunity. He warns that if we hate someone, we commit murder in our hearts. If we lust, we commit adultery in the heart, etc."

Then take the time to tell him of the reality of hell. Sinners like to picture hell as a fun, hedonistic, pleasure-filled place where they can engage in all the sensual sins that are forbidden here. But Jesus said that it is a place of torment, where the worm never dies and the fire is never quenched (Matthew 9:45-47). We tend to forget what pain is like when we don’t have it. Can you begin to imagine how terrible it would be to be in agony, with no hope of relief? Many human beings go insane if they are merely isolated for a long time from other people. Imagine how terrible it would be if God merely withdrew all the things we hold so dear—friendship, love, color, light, peace, joy, laughter, and security. Hell isn’t just a place with an absence of God’s blessings, it is punishment for sin. It is literal torment, forever. That’s why the Bible warns that it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

God has given His Law to convince men of their sins, and unless a sinner is convinced that he has sinned against God, he won’t see that hell is his eternal destiny. He may consider it a fit place for others, but not for himself. That’s why we mustn’t hesitate to open up the Law and show that each individual is personally responsible for sin, and that God’s wrath abides on him because of it. Ask him to consider why you would say such things to him if it wasn’t true. Tell him to examine your motives. You are so concerned for his eternal welfare that you are prepared to risk offending him.

Then ask him if he would sell an eye for a million dollars. Would he sell both for ten million? No one in his right mind would. Our eyes are precious to us.

How much more then is our eternal soul worth?

The Reality of Hell

(The following is taken from the Way of the Master Online School of Biblical Evangelism at www.biblicalevangelism.com.)

“Save some, O Christians! By all means, save some. From yonder flames and outer darkness, and the weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth, seek to save some! Let this, as in the case of the apostle, be your great, ruling object in life, that by all means you might save some.”

- Charles H. Spurgeon

“There is no doctrine which I would more willingly remove from Christianity than the doctrine of hell, if it lay in my power. But it has the full support of Scripture and, especially, of our Lord’s own words; it has always been held by the Christian Church, and it has the support of reason.”

- C.S. Lewis

While it is true that God is love (1 John 4:8), He is also just (Nehemiah 9:32,33; 2 Thessalonians 1:6) and eternal (Psalm 90:2; 1 Timothy 1:17). God will therefore punish the evil doer (Isaiah 13:11) and this punishment will be eternal. It will also be conscious. Scripture tells us of the rich man who found himself in hell (Luke 16:19–31). He was conscious and was able to feel pain, to thirst, and to experience remorse. He wasn’t asleep in the grave; he was in a place of “torment.” We tend to forget what pain is like when we don’t have it. Can you imagine how terrible it would be to be in agony, with no hope of relief?

Many human beings go insane if they are merely isolated for a long time from other people. Imagine how terrible it would be if God simply withdrew all the things we hold so dear—friendship, love, color, light, peace, joy, laughter. Hell isn’t just a place with an absence of God’s blessings; it is punishment for sin. It is literal torment, forever. That’s why the Bible warns that it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. The fate of the unsaved is described with such fearful words as the following:

● “Shame and everlasting contempt” (Daniel 12:2)
● “Everlasting punishment” (Matthew 25:46)
● “Weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 24:51)
● “Fire unquenchable” (Luke 3:17)
● “Indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish” (Romans 2:8,9)
● “Everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord” (2 Thessalonians 1:9)
● “Eternal fire . . . the blackness of darkness for ever” (Jude 7,13)

Revelation 14:10,11 tells us the final, eternal destiny of the sinner: “He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone . . . the smoke of their torment ascended up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day or night.” Scripture is quite clear: hell is a real place. It is not mere unconsciousness. It is not temporal. It is eternal torment. If hell is a place of knowing nothing or a reference to the grave into which we go at death, Jesus’ statements about hell make no sense. He said that if your hand, foot, or eye causes you to sin, it would be better to remove it than to “go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched” (Mark 9:43–48). Jesus spoke more of hell than of heaven and spent much time warning people not to go there. After all, if people just stopped existing, why warn them? If hell were temporal, they’d get out in a while. But because it is eternal and conscious, we must do everything we can to warn them.

However, a sinner won’t see that hell is his eternal destiny unless he is convinced by the Law that he has sinned against God. He may consider hell a fit place for others, but not for himself. That’s why we must not hesitate to open up the Law and show that each individual is personally responsible for his sin, and that God’s wrath abides on him because of it.

(Note: Next post will discuss the "reasonableness" of Hell.)

The Law of the Lord

According to Psalm 19:7a, "The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul:..." Hence the name of our ministry, Perfect Law Ministries.

Let me ask you a question: Proverbs 20:6 asserts that most people will proclaim their own goodness, so...do you consider yourself to be a good person?

If you said, “Yes,” then you’re just like most people. But how do you define “good?” Chances are, your definition would be a little different from the next person, and theirs would be a little different from the next, and so on.

However, there is one definition of “good” that applies to everyone.

The Ten Commandments define “good” according to God’s perfect standard, which never changes (Exodus 20:1-17).

Have you kept the Ten Commandments? To find out, answer the following questions honestly:

Have you ever lied (even one fib, half-truth, or exaggeration)? Have you ever stolen anything in your whole life, no matter how small (the value doesn’t matter)?

If you said, “Yes,” then you are a lying thief. Bad news, huh? Hang on…there’s more:

Have you ever had sex outside of marriage? If so, you’re a fornicator. Jesus said that “Whoever looks at a woman to lust after her hath has committed adultery with her already in his heart” (Matthew 5:28).” If you’ve ever hated someone, the Bible says you are a murderer (1 John 3:15).

What’s more, you have a conscience (“conscience” means “with knowledge”), so when you sin, you do it with knowledge that it’s wrong (Romans 2:15).

Bearing in mind that God is perfect, and that he has seen your every thought, when you stand before Him on Judgment Day and He judges you by the Ten Commandments, will you be innocent or guilty?

If you’ve been honest so far, you’ve already seen that you’d be guilty before God. So would you go to Heaven or Hell?

The bible says that “all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone,” (Revelation 21:8), and that no adulterers, fornicators, thieves, or murderers can enter the kingdom of Heaven. You might not believe that, but it will happen no matter what you believe.

That brings us to the good news: Do you know what God did for you so you wouldn’t have to go to Hell?

“But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).” You are guilty of breaking God’s Law, but Jesus took your punishment…He paid your fine in full…by suffering and dying on a cross 2000 years ago. Then He rose from the dead and defeated the grave.

That’s good news for you because if you repent (which means to confess and turn away from your sin) and put your trust in Jesus to save you (that is, if you trust Jesus like you would trust a parachute…you wouldn’t just believe in it, you’d put it on and hold tightly to it), then God will forgive you and grant you everlasting life – what better news could there be!

Read the Bible every day and obey what you read. God will never let you down.
